For over 20 years Life Happens, a nonprofit organization, has dedicated its resources to helping consumers take personal financial responsibility through the ownership of life insurance. The truth is, every year families with no life insurance protection are bankrupted by the loss of a wage earner. Which is why for the past 14 years Life Happens has sponsored the Life Lessons Scholarship Program, made possible by the generosity of companies like AccuQuote.

This year AccQuote and Life Happens recognize Megan Kawa with a $5000 college scholarship. In keeping with the spirit of the award, Megan has persevered in the face of tremendous adversity when she lost her uninsured dad in 2015. Take some time to support our youth by watching Megan’s videos and spreading the word.

The loss of a parent is a devastating, life-changing event. For those with no life insurance protection, the death of a parent can come at the expense of long-held dreams. As life paths are forever changed and adult responsibilities take the place of dreams, devastated families are left piecing together their emotional and financial lives.

Megan’s dad left behind a daughter, son with special needs and a loving wife. With such upheaval in their lives, the family was unsure about what their future held. There were so many questions: who would take care of her brother while mom worked at night and Megan was off at college? How would college and special needs care be paid for? Was there enough money for the basics – food and shelter?

While some are crushed under the weight of new responsibilities, Megan continued chasing her dreams. Life had to go on and Megan knew that her dad would want his family to move forward and continue to make him proud.

If you’ve experienced the devastation of losing a parent and need help chasing your college dreams, learn more about the Life Lessons Scholarship Program and stay tuned for next year’s scholarship. In the meantime, check out Megan’s submission video and learn more about her story.
