Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer diagnosed in women in the U.S., after skin cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic. Because of early detection and improved cancer research, millions of women are surviving breast cancer. And the number of deaths due to breast cancer has been steadily declining for years.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is a malignant tumor that begins growing in the breast cells and invades surrounding tissues, spreading to distant areas of the body.
The most common treatments for breast cancer are surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy) and radiation therapy. Secondary treatments include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and other targeted therapies.
In 2012, the American Medical Association has recommended that health insurance plans cover mammography screenings for women after age 40.
The good news is that some women can get life insurance – even if they’ve had breast cancer. For example, the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer is Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS), and this form is non-life-threatening, but it can develop into a deadlier form later on. But it is not uncommon for women with DCIS to qualify for life insurance.

Howard Weissman, AccuQuote’s Medical Underwriting Expert, will tell you more about how you may be able to get life insurance – even you’ve had or are being treated for breast cancer. Howard points out that the two things that insurance carriers look at are the “stage” (size and spread of the cancer) and “grade” (appearance and growth pattern of the breast cells) of the cancer.
