What Comes to Mind When You Hear the Words “Life Insurance”?

When people think of the words “life insurance,” many have an uneasy aftertaste to the term. Why? This blog explores the benefits of life insurance and why some people are hinky about coverage.

Say you’re a tourist visiting New York City. You go into any coffee shop or diner and order a bagel. You take in chewy lusciousness of this famous Big Apple treat, then you suddenly blurt out: “This is awesome! How come this is so much better that those crappy ones in the freezer section of my local supermarket? What’s the secret?” Inevitably, a local New Yorker will reflexively say: “It’s the water!” From Flatbush to Fifth Avenue, every New Yorker knows with complete certainty that the, um, special water from the Hudson River is the key ingredient to the unique taste and texture of the time-honored New York bagel.

Speaking of “certainty,” let’s try a little word association. What word or phrase comes to mind when you hear the term “life insurance”? I’m willing to bet that some of the words that come to mind are: “complicated”..“unnecessary”…“expensive”…“hard-to-get”…“pain-in-the-butt.” Which is understandable. I’ve been in the life insurance business for over 30 years. I know that, to many people, the entire life insurance industry is viewed with a certain degree of distain and skepticism. After all, you have DIE for your family to benefit from most life insurance policies. Not a great selling point. I get it!

I might have a slight bias, but I think life insurance is one of the most misunderstood products ever invented. And I also think life insurance gets a bad rap that it doesn’t deserve. Let me explain why.

Many of us remember the exhausting three-hour kitchen table talk fest that our parents went through with their local insurance agent when they bought their first family policy. It was just plain torture. I’ll admit, not a great first impression, for sure.

But as they say: “First impressions can be deceiving.” Just curious, do you think your parents were unhappy that they bought coverage? It doubt it.

My rule of thumb is…if you have a negative view of life insurance…that’s probably because you don’t have any. Because if you did have a life policy, you’d know, firsthand, how valuable having coverage is for your family.

Life insurance can turn pennies into dollars when your family needs the financial help the most. I mean, think about it. What would happen to your family’s finances if you were to suddenly die? Would your family be able to pay the bills? Would the mortgage get paid? Would you still be able to send your kids to college?

One common misconception about life insurance is that it’s really expensive. Nothing could be further from the truth. For example, a Term Life Insurance policy can protect your family for durations (terms) of 10 to 30 years, at a very affordable rate.

Say you’re a healthy 35-year old male. You can purchase a 20-year term life policy, with $500,000 worth of coverage…for $252 a year! That’s less than a dollar a day! You can’t even get a cup of coffee for that price.

There are also No Medical Exam Insurance policies that can get you covered (policy amounts are generally $500,000) without a medical exam. And you can typically get covered in just a few weeks.
